Khartoum- Al-Zawiya Net- The population returning to the city of Khartoum Bahri- on their saying- is a new reality that was not familiar to them, as some squares and squares inside the city’s neighborhoods turned into alternative graves throughout the war period.

The “Sudan Tribune” tour monitored a number of graves inside the Shambat neighborhood at a time when some of the deceased people seek to transfer the remains of the dead to the public graves in the city, while at the same time they suffer difficulties to return to life in the absence of services.

The residents who did not leave their homes throughout the war period were forced to bury their dead inside the neighborhoods in light of the continued military operations and restrictions imposed by the rapid support forces on the movement of citizens at the time.

The city of Khartoum has been naval under the control of the Rapid Support Forces since the outbreak of the war in mid -April 2023, until the army managed to regain control of the city in late January.

Volunteer Yaqoub Ahmed stated that the residents had no choice but to burial in the closest place to walk for long distances for fear of continuous bombing or restrictions in the movement inside the city.

The Civil Defense Department transferred a number of bodies after the neighborhood residents’ reports, but some bodies are still in homes or on the internal roads of the neighborhood.

And “Sudan Tribune” monitored a decomposing corpse of a rapid support element inside a house, which indicates another challenge with the possibility of more bodies in the open inside the houses that are still deserted.

In his testimony to “Sudan Tribune”, Yaqoub explained that some families want to transfer the remains of their dead to public graves, and pointed out that one of his neighbors, a Syrian nationality, was able to transfer the remains of his child from the neighborhood’s cemetery to public graves.

But Muhammad Abbas, who is still residing in the city of Omdurman, sought to transfer the remains of his brother to public graves, but he faced complex police measures and was unable to complete the procedures for the conditions of movement and work.

According to the residents of the neighborhood, there are some graves inside the homes, where dozens of residents of the neighborhood were killed as a result of the bombing or because of the diets and cholera that were destroyed in the city during the war period.

Part of the Stadium of Shambat and the Khader Bashir theater in Shambat Al -Hilla turned into alternative graves, while the “Sudan Tribune” tour monitored a small cemetery around the Square 3 mosque with the stretch of Shambat.

According to the residents of the neighborhood, the volunteers, during the control of the Rapid Support Forces, were sometimes forced to bury two bodies in one grave, fearing for a long time to stay in the streets.

The volunteer activist Musab Al -Jack indicated in an interview with “Sudan Tribune” that they took some steps with the police to transport the raised remains in the streets and squares to public graves, but the parliamentary and bureaucratic procedures followed immediately, after referring to the Safia Police Department as the jurisdiction.

The volunteer explained that the police asked them to collect the largest reports to facilitate the procedures related to the evacuation of the roads and squares of Khartoum Bahr from the graves, which, according to activists, could constitute an obsession when families return to their homes and their neighborhoods that left them for more than two years.
