Ethiopia responds to Trump about the “Renaissance Dam”

Follow-up- Al-Zawiya Net- The Minister of Water and Energy in Ethiopia, Hiptamo Etava, said in response to the statements of US President Donald Trump, in which he criticized “American financing” to “Renaissance Dam”, that the project was “built by the Ethiopian people.

Trump had continued his attack on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, and claimed that his efforts established peace between Egypt and Ethiopia, in light of the presence of a huge dam “funded stupidly from the United States” that prevents water in the Great Nile River, as he put it.

The Ethiopian minister responded, in a tweet on the X platform today, Saturday, and said: “The Renaissance Dam is a local project built by the people for the people, not with foreign aid!”

Trump’s comments came in a post through his account on the “Truth Social” platform on Saturday, as he criticized the United States’ funding for the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which Egypt is strongly opposed and calls for a conclusion of an agreement to coordinate its operating mechanism between the source and the estuary.

Trump was referring to his efforts in concluding peace or calm agreements between many countries around the world, and he mentioned between them Egypt and Ethiopia and said, “I will not get the Nobel Peace Prize for the preservation of peace between Egypt and Ethiopia” and then criticized what he described as “stupid financing” from America to the Ethiopian Dam.

Trump played the mediator in the Renaissance Dam negotiations, in 2019 and 2020, when Washington hosted the negotiations under the auspices of the US Treasury Secretary and with the participation of the World Bank, but eventually failed after Ethiopia refused to sign.

Trump launched a scathing attack on Addis Ababa and said in front of the cameras that Egypt had intended to “bomb the dam, because it will not be able to live in this way,” as he said about Egypt: “They should have stopped him a long time before the start of its establishment.
