UN envoy to visit Sudan amid international efforts for peace
December 19, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – United Nations Special Envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, will visit Port Sudan on Saturday, Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssif confirmed to Sudan Tribune on Thursday.
During his visit, Lamamra will meet with officials in Port Sudan to discuss developments in the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He will also address international and regional efforts to contain the crisis, focusing on both security and humanitarian aspects.
Lamamra recently participated in the third consultative meeting on enhancing coordination of peace initiatives and efforts in Sudan, which concluded on Wednesday in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
The meeting, chaired by Mauritanian Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, adopted resolutions reinforcing a joint approach to coordination and collective action in response to the Sudanese crisis. A closing statement emphasized the importance of regular consultative meetings to exchange views on the current state of strategic coordination and to activate mediation and peace initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict while ensuring their complementarity.
The consultative meeting expressed deep concern about the continued fighting in Sudan and its devastating impact on the Sudanese people, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation, including over 11 million internally displaced persons, 3 million refugees, and a food crisis.
The participant recalled UN Security Council Resolution 2736 of June 13, 2024, which strongly condemns the violence in Sudan and all human rights violations. It also condemns the destruction of civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, the seizure of civilian buildings and homes, and the forced displacement of their owners.
The meeting commended the valuable efforts of all participants in their various capacities to conduct ceasefire negotiations, protect civilians, ensure unhindered access to humanitarian aid, and support efforts to launch an inclusive political dialogue leading to a civilian-led transitional government.
