According to recent reports, Internet pirates took advantage of the search results on Google to inflict victims, as happened with the question “Are Bengali cats legal in Australia?”, Where they hacked the search results to direct users to malicious sites.

Search engine poisoning

Internet pirates depend on a technology called “search engine poisoning”, where they manipulate the search results on Google by setting links to malignant sites at the highest results. When clicking on these links, users are transferred to penetrated web sites containing malicious programs that automatically carry computers, which exposes the user information to risk and may lead to the theft of personal data or the installation of ransom programs.

Experts have revealed a set of words and phrases that users should avoid searching for Google to protect their devices from security threats, namely:

1- Customer service number: The Internet hackers buy ads for terms such as “customer service number” to show their malicious sites in the first search results. Many users make mistakes in considering these links legitimate and clicking on them, to discover later that they are dealing with fraudsters trying to steal their personal information.

Experts advise checking customer service numbers through the official websites of companies instead of relying on the search results in Google.

2- Easy loans: Internet pirates take advantage of people with financial hardship through very attractive offers, “they seem to be an irreplaceable opportunity to get loans easily.”

The results of the research related to terms such as “easy loans” or “remote remote -wage functions” are manipulated, in order to attract victims to sites containing malware.

After entering these sites, the victim may be asked to provide banking information or download malicious programs that allow those who have controlled his device.

3-: “Google Authenticator” in an attempt to hunt Internet users looking for safety applications such as Google Authenticator, the Internet hackers began buying fraudulent ads that lead to sites that mimic the famous application.

When clicking on these links, users are required to download a fake application that contains malicious programs. This causes the user’s personal data to be stolen or his device is infected with viruses.

Experts are advised to avoid clicking on fake ads and going directly to official applications stores.

4- Sports mental power questionnaire: Poisoning attacks on Google are not limited to public phrases, but may also target certain groups of people. For example, security researchers discovered a fraud campaign targeting sports enthusiasts, as the phrase “Sports Mental Power questionnaire” was included in the results of the research. When clicking on the links associated with the phrase, malware pdf files containing malicious programs automatically install viruses on the victim’s device.

It is advised to be careful when downloading files and checking their sources.

5- Fake online medications: The penetration of websites to sell fake medicines has become one of the common methods used by Internet pirates to target users.

Several WordPress sites have been hacked and provided with fake links promoting Viagra and counterfeit medicines. These sites appear in the search results as legitimate, which makes users believe that they buy original medications, while they are in fact dealing with fraudulent sites.

Experts are advised to avoid clicking on the links that promote online drugs, and to search only in official websites.
