February 4, 2025 (KHARTOUM)—The Sudanese army said it recaptured the town of Al-Kamlin in Al-Jazirah state on Tuesday after days of heavy fighting with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said troops were advancing near the capital, Khartoum.
The army launched a new offensive in Al-Jazirah state, in central Sudan, on Jan. 31 and has since retaken several towns, including Rufa’a, Tamboul and Al-Hasahisa, as well as areas in the East Nile locality of Khartoum state.
“The army has liberated the city of Al-Kamlin and is determined to reach Khartoum,” said Abdel Moneim Abdel Baset, a commander of an army unit in Sennar.
Videos circulated online showed soldiers in Al-Kamlin, with some residents celebrating their arrival. Sudan Tribune could not independently verify the videos.
Al-Burhan, who also heads the ruling Sovereign Council, visited the town of Wad Abu Salih in the East Nile locality on Tuesday. He reiterated his call for continued fighting until the RSF is defeated and said government forces were approaching the Soba Bridge east of Khartoum and the town of Al-Masaid south of the capital, according to statements released by his office.
Military sources told Sudan Tribune that the army and allied militias repelled an RSF attack on the East Nile Triangle area, inflicting significant casualties and damage.
Videos posted by the Sudan Shield Forces, a militia led by Abu Aqila Keikel, showed several captured military vehicles, which they claimed were seized from the RSF. Sudan Tribune could not independently verify the claims.
Fighting between the army and the RSF, which erupted in mid-April, has killed thousands and displaced millions. The conflict has further destabilized the region.
