Follow-up- Al-Zawiya Net- The Sudanese Airlines announcement raised its intention to resume its operations from Khartoum Airport, wide reactions, amid questions about the possibility of implementing this step under the current circumstances.

The scenes of Khartoum Airport after the outbreak of the conflict indicate the extent of the damage it suffered, including the burning planes and the passenger hall that was subjected to partial collapses due to the bombing, which reflects the size of the challenges facing its restart.

In this context, “Radio Dabanga” contacted two experts in the aviation sector, one of whom is a former pilot and the other is an air engineer, to find out the requirements necessary to restart the airport and start flights from it. According to the official responses, there are technical and security standards that must be achieved to ensure the safety of civil aviation.

The basic requirements for restarting Khartoum Airport

According to Article (1) of the Chicago Agreement of 1944, each country has a full sovereignty over its airspace, which requires Sudan to fulfill the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) before reopening its airspace to civil flights.

The restart of the Sudanese airspace requires the minimum technical and security controls, as well as the strict compliance with the safety standards determined by the international organization. In this context, it is possible to benefit from the experiences of countries such as Libya, Yemen and Iraq, which managed to restore part of their air field after conflicts, in full coordination with the competent authorities to ensure the provision of a safe and stable environment for civil aviation operations.
