Follow-up- Al-Zawiya Net- The Sudanese embassy in Nairobi denied the validity of the Kenyan President William Roto’s statements regarding the continuation of Kenyan tea exports to Sudan.

She confirmed Khartoum’s full commitment to prohibiting the Kenyan imports that were imposed last month, and said in a press statement that Sudan had stopped all imports from Kenya, including tea, since March 11, 2025, in implementation of a decision issued by the Sudanese Ministry of Trade and Supply.

The statement added that this decision “comes within the framework of the Sudanese national interests” and that it was “fully applied without any exceptions.”

The Sudanese clarification came in response to Roto’s recent statements, in which he said that his country is still selling tea to Sudan, despite the announcement of Khartoum to stop buying it, adding that “the market itself forced them to do so.”

On March 11, the Sudanese Ministry of Trade and Supply announced the suspension of all imports from Kenya, noting economic and national considerations. Khartoum did not officially clarify the reasons for the ban, but the decision came amid the escalation of diplomatic tensions between the two countries, especially in light of Sudanese accusations of Kenya of interfering in Sudanese internal affairs and supporting certain parties in the current conflict.

Although Kenya denied any interference in the Sudanese crisis, the relations between the two countries have witnessed increasing tension during the past months, as Sudan summoned its ambassador in Nairobi to consult in February 2025, in protest against Kenyan positions described as “non -neutral” towards the internal Sudanese conflict.

The Sudanese embassy statement in Nairobi confirmed today that Sudan “is still committed to regional cooperation and constructive dialogue”, but at the same time stressed the need to respect its sovereign decisions, rejecting “any allegations indicating otherwise.”
