RJMEC calls for political will to implement peace agreement

He addressed the 9855th sitting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Wednesday.
“With the extended Transitional Period due to begin in just over two weeks, key immediate requirements are the demonstration of political will and provision of funding for the Agreement institutions and mechanisms,” said Gituai.
The Interim Chairperson also gave a detailed status of the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
He urged harmonisation of the work plans of the National Elections Commission (NEC), National Constitutional Review Commission (NCRC) and the completion of the unification of forces.
Gituai said the recent skirmishes in Western Equatoria State between South Sudan army (SSPDF) and the armed opposition (SPLM/A-IO) over the removal of illegal checkpoints are concerning.
“Persistent levels of intercommunal violence in some parts of the country continue to create disruption, and anxiety and is unsettling,” he added,
Gituai said ongoing Tumaini process in Nairobi, Kenya remains the best opportunity for peace.

“The people of South Sudan are looking forward to a positive outcome of these talks and hoping that it will bring practical and enhanced transformative approaches in addressing the root causes of conflict, and will hasten the implementation of the Peace Agreement,” he stressed. The Interim Chairperson o RJME appealed to the Security Council to remain seized of the peace process in South Sudan, as it enters critical phase of the extended transitional period. He urged the Council to encourage the international community to mobilise resources and political support to help South Sudan conduct its first democratic elections in December 2026. (ST)
