The Sudanese Teachers Committee reveals the tragedy of a sovereign decision

Follow-up- Al-Zawiya Net- The Sudanese Teachers Committee said that it was surprised by the decision to reduce the value of a meal allowance from 90 thousand pounds to 30 thousand pounds as of June, according to the decision of the Council of Ministers issued on May 27, 2025, then it is modified to only 60 thousand pounds for the year 2026, to be returned to its original value in 2027.

She emphasized that this decision is not just a financial procedure, but rather a complete crime against hundreds of thousands of workers who live in conditions that are the most difficult in the modern history of Sudan, especially teachers who have withstood the war despite salaries in some states for more than a year and a half.

She said in a statement that the Sudanese Teachers ’Committee had prepared a precise scientific study, which was submitted to the official authorities, and clarified with the shocking numbers and data that: the monthly living cost of a Sudanese family consisting of five individuals ranging from 354,500 pounds in the lowest states, to reach more than 2,800,000 pounds in some areas such as Port Sudan.

The current average monthly wage covers only 1-8% of this cost.

More than 90% of the state’s employees live below the extreme poverty line according to international standards.

Despite these horrific facts, the Ministry of Finance promised to conduct limited increases during the year 2025, which are increases in our view that were not insufficient and did not address the origin of the crisis, but at least it would have reduced something of the heavy burden even if a small percentage. But what is aggravated by the tragedy is that it has not implemented anything from these promises to this day, so that the workers remain stuck between unbearable high costs and unimaginable promises.

This study did not leave any doubt that workers, foremost of which are teachers, are the most affected category of absurd war that destroyed their resources and pushed them towards hunger and poverty, in the absence of policies that protect them or even keep them minimal of dignity.

In the Teachers ’Committee, we clearly see that this decision reflects the absence of the true will of reform, the continuation of policies that increase the poor, and the transformation of the lives of workers into an unbearable hell, rather than taking serious steps to raise the minimum wage or even keep the existing meager suits.

We emphasize again:

The right to a reward that guarantees a decent life is an inadvertent legal and moral right.

Reducing a meal allowance in this catastrophic circumstance is a direct insult to teachers and all workers.

The continuation of this approach will lead to the migration of competencies and the collapse of basic services in education, health and all state facilities.

We hold the official authorities responsibility (especially the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance, who has a heresy of the arranged) with the full of these policies, and we demand the abolition of the decision immediately, and the approval of the results of the teachers ’committee’s study as a basis for a comprehensive reform that guarantees the right of workers in a decent life, and holding accountable parties that issued this decision starting from the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Finance represented in its agent.

This decision now shows the true significance of the decision to recycle ancient (unions) to pass deductions and digest the rights of teachers, by passing such decisions and adding a kind of false legitimacy on them.
