Bakri Gawish, revealed that an explosion in a gold mining factory belonging to the Turkish company “Dalqo” on Sunday in northern Sudan, which resulted in “serious” environmental damage and is considered an indication of “the fragility of environmental standards adopted in mining sites”.
The organization called for immediate and decisive measures to contain the increasing environmental and health risks associated with gold mining activities in the northern state, and warned of catastrophic repercussions on human health and environmental balance in the region.
An unprecedented rise in cancer
Gawish said that during the past months the region recorded an unprecedented rise in the rates of cancer and stroke, which enhances fears of pollution resulting from the use of toxic substances such as mercury and hynaed, which are still used despite their ban in many countries because of their devastating effects on human health and the environment.
Claims for immediate closure of mining markets
The organization called for the immediate closure of the mining markets in both “625” in Dakho, “The Dark”, and “Sakina” in Abu Bousra, as well as stopping the activities of companies operating in the treatment of mining waste until a comprehensive environmental review and ensuring their commitment to legal controls and international standards.
Gawish stressed that the continuation of the current methods without strict control represents an existential threat to local communities, noting that the re -use of toxic substances “exacerbates soil and water pollution and doubles injuries to chronic diseases.”
The organization called on the Sudanese government to fulfill its obligations in the field of the environment, and the application of the provisions of international agreements approved by Sudan, stressing that any relaxation in this file may lead to a catastrophe that cannot be contained in the near future.
