The European Union announces great transformations towards Port Sudan

Follow-up- Al-Zawiya Net- The European Union announced the appointment of German diplomat Volram Fitter as its new ambassador to Sudan, at a time when Brussels’s policy towards Port Sudan is a remarkable shift.

The appointment of Vieter comes as a successor to the Irish Ambassador Aidan Uhar, who will leave his position soon to take over the position of his country’s ambassador in Egypt, where the European Union Mission is currently being centered in Sudan.

Vivat is considered one of the veteran diplomats in African affairs, as he previously headed the European Union mission to Burkina Faso until 2023, before returning to the headquarters of the European diplomatic apparatus in Brussels.
This change comes in conjunction with indicators of the willingness of a number of European countries – including Italy and the Netherlands – to resume communication channels with the existing authorities in Port Sudan, after a diplomatic break that has lasted since the coup of 2021.

According to diplomatic sources, these countries are considering adopting an “cooperative -based cooperative” approach in dealing with the new Sudanese reality.

This new trend is linked to the pursuit of the delivery of humanitarian aid, the support of the resumption of the transitional process, and the prevention of Sudan’s drift towards deeper alliances with Russia or Iran. It also intersects with the appointment of the new Prime Minister Kamel Al -Tayeb Idris, who was chosen last May by the army commander Abdel -Fattah al -Burhan.

While some European officials began to hold meetings with the proof and members of the Sovereignty Council, a unified position has not yet been registered at the European Union level on recognition or dealing with the upcoming government in Port Sudan.
To date, Swiss Silvan Estehi Swiss envoy is the only Western official who officially met Idris.

For his part, Ambassador Al -Magharad Aidan Uhar was keen to adhere to the policy of “strict neutrality” that the European Union pursues in its dealings with the conflict between the army and the forces of the secret call, as it dealt with the two parties as equal parties in the dialogue. However, this neutrality, according to observers, has slowed and complex efforts to reach a peaceful settlement.

The European Union’s efforts are currently focusing on supporting humanitarian operations through the Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Directorate (DG Echo), as well as pressure on the United Nations to coordinate with both the Army’s Humanitarian Aid Commission, and the Relief and Humanitarian Operations Agency of the Widged Support.
Nevertheless, the United Nations still considers Abdel -Fattah al -Burhan a legitimate president of the Sudanese state.
