Follow-up- Al-Zawiya Net- UNICEF has announced the record of about 7,700 cases of cholera, including more than a thousand infections for children under the age of five, as well as the death of 185 people in cholera in Khartoum state since January 2025 AD.

In a statement yesterday, UNICEF indicated that more than three million people have escaped from Khartoum at the beginning of the armed conflict, and with the improved access to large parts of the capital, about 34,000 people have returned to their homes since the beginning of the year 2025.

The statement continued: “Most people return to devastating homes in areas that lack basic services, including water and sanitation, which are necessary to prevent diseases, noting that more than a million children live in affected areas throughout the state of Khartoum.

The statement said that the repeated attacks on the power stations in Khartoum during the past month caused the power outage and the increase in the severity of water shortages, which greatly affected the possibility of access to safe and clean water.

And UNICEF added: “Many families were forced to collect water from unsafe and polluted sources, which increased the risk of cholera and other water -transferred diseases, especially in crowded neighborhoods and displacement sites.”

The statement pointed out that the cases of cholera increased in the state of Khartoum from 90 cases per day to 815 per day between May 15 and 25, an increase of nine times in just ten days.

The statement warned against facing the locals of Jabal Awlia and Khartoum, the danger of starvation, representing 33% of a total of 307,000 children suffering from acute malnutrition in Khartoum State.

UNICEF indicated that 26,500 of these children suffer from severe severe malnutrition and can be cholera or any other cause of severe diarrhea is deadly if not treated immediately.

UNICEF said it raced time with partners to provide basic health care, clean water, good nutrition and child -saving services.

“Every day it passes, more children are exposed to this double danger, but both of them are cholera and malnutrition and can be prevented and treated if we can reach children at the appropriate time.”

According to the statement, UNICEF delivered more than 1.6 million doses of oral cholera vaccine to Sudan and supports vaccination campaigns in affected areas.
